Xintiandi Style Mall Opening & Fashion Show Nov 16, 2010

16 11 2010

This post is a live post in regards to the new Xintiandi Style shopping Mall that opened in of all places Xintiandi, Shanghai.  Yesterday when I was in Xintiandi I noticed that there was a runway two blocks long from one end of Xintiandi to the other.  Below is a preview of the runway set up yesterday:

Xintiandi Style Runway Setup

After walking the runway, I decided to check out the mall… It looks fancy, sharp and classy.  I am sure it is expensive but the major challenge in Shanghai these days are there are many malls opening this fall alone.  The Xintiandi Style mall appeared to be 80% full with tenants but there were only a few people wondering throughout with most of the people not carrying bags from recent purchases.

Today I was back in Xintiandi for lunch and noticed further developments with the stage and decided it would be best to ask a staff member when the show would begin.  I was advised the show would begin at 2:00pm and it now was 1:40pm, so I decided to stick around to catch the action.  One problem is I had no camera with me, so the photos you are about to see are from my iPhone 3.

The show was long and after 20 minutes I decided it would be best to get back to work and share the action with you.

Spin Expo, Sept 2010, Hong Kong Polytechnic University Fashion Show

16 11 2010

Immediately after the Santoni Fashion show there was another show highlighting the designs of students and teachers from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  I decided it would be best to stick around as I had a great front row seat.

The show started off as a colorful and imaginative with lots of cutouts, imagery, and prints.  But then became dark and gloomy before the crisp White and light Grey techno inspirations hit the floor.  Then the runway changed again to an eclectic look followed by a feminine male, contemporary female and finished with futuristic look.

Below is a review of the show:

All in all it there was a gamma of looks with varying fits, styles, finishes and looks… there was something for everyone.  I was hoping to list the designer names to each and every runway above, but that quickly became a F/T job, so instead if you would like to know who the designers were, please click here: HKPU Programme Rundown v2

Spin Expo Sept, 2010 Santoni Fashion Show

8 11 2010

On the first day of Spin Expo I noticed that they were having regular fashions shows, and I attended the Santoni fashion show.

The fashion shows were held in one of the tents and I got there early so I was lucky to get a seat in the front row, below are some images from the show:

I was impressed by the show and after-wards I headed to the 3rd floor to the Santoni booth to see and touch their products.  I also meet with management; we discussed machinery costs, product development, processes, and machinery placement.  It was an educational and informative session but they are missing the boat on execution and placement.

I tried to point out the obvious but it appeared as management would rather have the old and comfortable over a new perspective and idea, strange since the machinery is revolutionary.

Spin Expo, September 2010

12 10 2010

Where to start…  hum this a question I usually don’t ask but today and since the show it has been my reality… how many parts should be in this blog?  Part I, Part II, Part III, etc… These days it is starting to feel like I don’t have enough time so unfortunately I will not be able to share everything with you.  If you would like an in-depth overview or have a specific product or business need you can contact me directly.

This post is about the Spin Expo that was held at the Pudong Expo in Shanghai from September 7th through 9th, 2010.  As last year’s expo was my highlight trade fair, I was excited about the show and wanted to be there early for the opening day but was delayed until noon time.  It was a beautiful and extremely hot (35c+) Shanghai summer day.  Upon arrival I noticed tents on both sides of the expo and a sign pointing to the direction of the entry.

Pudong Expo and registration sign

I then walked stage right til the next tent but I was advised that was not the entrance and I was told to continue around the corner til I got to the registration which was outside in the heat.   It was sweltering hot and everyone around was sweating, including me.

Form registration

Badge collection, ID verification

After getting my badge I quickly proceeded to the tent for a quick glimpse of what was in store.  Upon entry I was quickly stopped by a hulking security guard who didn’t like my badge placement, he requested that I move it from my bag to my neck.  I was not quick enough to jump and he was getting angry by the second, when I finally moved it, he looked at me like I was lucky he let me in.

Now past the hulking security guard I could proceed into fantasy land.  The room was full of developments, swatches, and stories which was a great delight to see.

The first day I spent the whole afternoon on the ground floor in lah lah land and chatted with product developers, trending companies, exhibitors and attendees about all the excitement and joy, then before I knew it the show was over…. Thankfully only for the day, the next morning I made sure I was back at the show earlier as I still had allot to see.

On the second day I went back to the inspiration floor for another look at what I possible missed and then I was off to the 2nd and 3rd floors.  On the second floor there were great inspirations and suppliers to be found, see below images of products.

On the third floor the heat was on as the air conditioning units were not working well and many people were complaining and sweat talking or walking.  On the positive side the show vibe was incredible; many suppliers had taking the lead and highlighted their own product, fabric and color trends and invested more dollars into their branding (Corporate, Booth) and execution.   Then there were other suppliers who went half way and then forget about what they were doing so they were not as well represented.  Those booths that went the distance had a constant buzz and attention throughout the show.   See images from the show floor:

All in all this is one of the best fairs to attend in Asia and most likely the world.  If you are the business of knitwear make sure you don’t miss this show.  If you can’t attend make sure you have someone on the ground looking out for your needs and wants. On my first day at the show I was lucky enough to have had the opportunity to chat with the founder of the show and her passion and intelligence exudes out of her every word.  She is a talented woman who has a great team; I look forward to working with her in the near future.

Always the best and happy knitwear sourcing from Shanghai, China.

Ningxia Buying Mission (Lingwu) Cashmere Industrial Park – Part III

27 09 2010

This is a continuation from the afternoon of the 2nd day of the Ningxia Buying Mission.  After a fabulous lunch we were back on the bus and heading to the Cashmere Industrial Park to check on a few yarn, knitting, and garment making operators.

It was a large of group of buyers led by delegates, factory general managers and VIP’s, see below photo from the parking lot:

Buyers, Delegates, General Managers, and VIP's

We arrived into the first factory which was spotless with pristine machines churning out the cashmere fibers (Goat hair) to yarn.  Below are photos from the animal fiber conversion to the final products:

Ningxia Buying Mission (Lingwu) Opening Ceremony & Fashion Show – Part II

15 09 2010

On the 2nd day of our Ningxia Buying Mission we were up early again for breakfast and a 7:30am departure for our one hour bus journey to Lingwu for the opening ceremony of The Third Ningxia Lingwu International Cashmere Expo and China (Lingwu) International Fashion Design Contest.

We arrived into Lingwu on a beautiful and sunny Saturday to a gala Red Carpet entry with a long line of spectators cheering, clapping and shaking hands.  See below photos from the reception:

After 20 minutes of speeches in the heat, the delegates celebrated the opening of the show.  Fireworks, smoke clouds, and pigeons were sent into the sky, see below photo:

Opening Lingwu Expo

After the opening ceremony we were given a coupon which entitled the guests to a free gift (beautiful cashmere/wool scarf from Philosofie)  which we collected back at the entry of the show.  Then we loaded back on the bus and went to the  hall for the opening ceremony and fashion show of the China (Lingwu) International Cashmere Design Contest 2010.

Lingwu Fashion Design Contest Delegates

The show was beautifully orchestrated, and I enjoyed the experience thoroughly.  It was like a miniature project runway, where 24 students and independent designers submitted their cashmere designs for a runway presentation.  The designers worked with select cashmere suppliers on all the finished products.

This is where and when I recognized I needed a professional camera as my point and shoot did not do the show justice.  My apologies in advance for the poor quality of these images.  If you would like to sponsor me with a proper camera let me know?  In exchange I can give you a name mention and advertising on the blog which gets thousands of hits.  Now back to the fashion show and the great execution of the show, the contestants, the materials, the stage, and more.

Tailored Clothing

8 08 2010

As some of you may know I have been involved in the Fashion business for over 20 years in Asia and for the past two years well living in Shanghai I have been making tailored clothing with actual factories and utilizing my 10,000+ contacts for suppliers.

I started off by making clothes for myself and this year started making clothing for clients in Canada, USA and Malaysia.  I have analyzed the competition and I believe I have superior sourcing, design, development, and garment knowledge.   Many believe this is a business I should pursue and I couldn’t agree more.  So now I am looking to grow this business into a full-time occupation.  I am looking for working and financial partners.  For working partners I am looking for a technology person (Global) and a sales/marketing, business development (North America and/or Europe).  I have prepared a one page overview, executive summary and over 50 pages of financial analysis.  Interested parties please contact me.

Now let’s get back to the product… I have handpicked fabrics from Italy, Japan, and China utilizing the highest caliber factories, finishing materials, sewing techniques and trims.

You can shop for my products on Daft Shopping, http://www.daftshopping.com/?type=all&category=32   or check out my Flickr page for a full listing, http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreyliving/.  If you would like to have a three or two piece suit, blazer or shirt made of superior quality you know who to call.

China (Shanghai) International Textiles, Fabrics & Accessories Exhibition

23 06 2010

I am writing about the China (Shanghai) International Textiles, Fabrics & Accessories Exhibition I attended on June 9th,   the show ran from June 8th – 10th.  The trade show was held at one of the halls at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.  There were four other trade shows held at the same time at this location and they were: China Shanghai International Fashion Production (OEM) Exhibition 2010 put on by the same organizer, 4th International Exhibition for Logistics, Telematics and Transport, Aluminum China 2010, and 104th China Stationary Fair.  Transportation was provided from Longyang Road subway station to the Expo centre, see below photo of transportation:

Transportation to the show from the Longyang subway station

Inside the expo centre there were four areas for registration and four entrances to attend each individual trade show.   See below photos of registration and entrance:

Inside the Textiles, Fabrics & Accessories hall some aisles were busy and others were not, see below photos from the trade show floor:

Main Aisle, one hall to the next

The first aisle at entrance, front to back

The last aisle, front to back

Below are some photos of discoveries in the Textiles, Fabrics & Accessories hall:

Sustainable - recycled PET (Polyester)

Sustainable - Cocotex, environmental and health benefits

Double faced, loose weave

Flannel with Metallic stitch

Crinkle Indigo

Melange Jersey

Baby Phat - Patch embroidery in chenille

3D Embroidery

3D Embroidery, no fill

3D Heat Transfer

Inside the Fashion Production hall there were less people but it was still busy, see below photo from the trade show floor:

Below are some photos of discoveries in the Fashion Production hall:

Lamb Leather

Polyurethane (PU), fake leather, leatherette

Suiting (value)

Knit fashion top

Woven fashion skirt

Fashion fleece

In China, Guanxi (relationship) building is very important and it is also important to understand the customs and culture of the country see below photo of card presentation:

Two handed card display with bow

It was disappointing to see a handful of booths that were vacant, see below photos of exhibitors who did not show up:

No show exhibitor

No show exhibitor

Unmanned booth

Like all the smaller shows there are a lot of challenges and it is easy to be disappointed, you need to be a good miner and look for the gems as there are great suppliers to be discovered.   There were no areas for fashion trends, news, and/or seminars.

All in all, I took a few hundred photos and gathered information on products for clients, these items will be stored for access on SourceTheGlobe.com in the near future.  If you see anything you like or need help with sourcing, developments, procurement, and management please let me know.  It is much easier to utilize someone who knows the right suppliers than attempting to train and educate the suppliers that you already have.

My conclusion is it’s another textile and fashion trade fair in China that is held in Shanghai; a few of the suppliers that exhibit in this show do the circuit and exhibit in multiple shows.  The show was lacking excitement and energy.  It needs something special to give it some staying power.

Happy Sourcing…

China Keqiao Textile Expo

7 06 2010

I am writing about the China Keqiao International Textile, Fabrics, & Accessories Expo that ran from May 5 – 8th, 2010 in Keqiao, China which is located in Shaoxing, China which is known as the Textile City of China.  I arrived into Shaoxing via train from Shanghai on May 6th and attended the show on the 7th, when I got there I had to negotiate with a taxi to take me to Keqiao.  It was total Chaos and it was difficult to find a taxi to take me to Keqiao, finally one taxi had two other passengers going that way, so we agreed that I would pay him 50 RMB to take me to my hotel in Keqiao.

The organizer (Shanghai Gehua Exhibition) of the show and the Shaoxing Government provided a free 3 star hotel and transportation back to Shanghai on the 7th.  The hotel did not have A/C and it was warm so I slept with my window open the whole night as a cool breeze was refreshing.  But the mosquitoes were an issue so I decided it would be best to sleep with the window open but the blinds drawn.  Below is a picture of the driveway to the hotel:

New World Hotel - Keqiao, China Entrance Driveway

This was my fourth time at this show; previously I attended this show two times and exhibited another two times.  The organizer and government offer free transportation from Shanghai and hotel (4 star) to the show from May 5th through May 7th for all foreigners.  All foreigners means anyone holding a foreign passport who wants to attend.  I find that 95% of the foreigners they brought from Shanghai are just there for the experience and not industry professionals.   I also noticed that the hotel option was also downgraded as my current hotel was now a Chinese 3 star hotel.

On the 7th I was told to be downstairs at 8:30am for a bus ride to the expo from the hotel.  At 8:30am there was a handful of people on the bus, at 8:40am I was told the bus departure would be delayed til 9:30am.  At this point I decided it would be best to take a taxi to the show, so off to the busy rush hour to flag a taxi.  I finally arrived to the show at 9:00am, see below photos from the entrance:

Gala Entrance with balloons all over

Main building entrance

The entrance to registration area was busy with lots of people vying for the free promotional information, see below photo:

Promotional Counter - Everyone wants what is free

When I got to the front the show it was still not open and well I was standing around I noticed a group of students, so I asked that what they were doing at the show.  They expressed they were university students from Shaoxing visiting the show for interest.  They all wanted a picture with the foreigner, see below photo:

University students at the Expo

When the doors finally opened I noticed that some of the exhibitors still had not opened their booth right near the entrance, see below photo:

Early morning, booths not open

Inside the actual tradeshow it seemed smaller than previous shows; the quality of exhibitors has diminished.  I was told it was a challenge to find the exhibitors and that most who come to this show want lower priced suppliers.  I disagree as at the previous show I found a handful of great fashion and premium suppliers.  Beside the main hall of the show they had heavy industrial suppliers of equipment set up, see below photos:

Industrial Fabric Knitting Machinery

Industrial Knit Machinery

Inside the show they had a trending area in the middle of the hall, see below photos:

Trending Area

Fabrics China Creation Competition

Robotic Trends

Fabric Trends

A few booths had models to show off their fashions, see below photos:

Model showing off their new fashions

Model mannequins

At 1:30pm I needed to leave the show to catch a taxi back to the hotel where I could catch the bus back to Shanghai.  Upon leaving the main hall below is a photo of what I saw as I exited the show:

Expo Service Counter

Back in front of the hotel it seemed like the fashion industry was in full swing as trucks and workers kept on moving fabrics down the streets and into shops, see below photos:

Bulk Fabric Shops

Truck transportation

Human Transportation, how far did this guy travel?

Non-stop busyness

In closing I find the show is challenged with its identity and purpose.  It will need a complete over hall and re-branding to attract the right buyers, exhibitors and media attention.  The region of Zhejiang, Shaoxing and Keqiao is strong in the apparel industry and the show must demonstrate more of their strength to show that it has staying power and can compete and compliment against the larger Tier 1 and 2 cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing.

If you have any comments or feedback please leave below, thanks and happy textile sourcing.
